Coco peat is the fine, spongy material that comes from coconut husk once the long fibre has been taken out. It holds water well and is used as a growing medium. It is washed to reduce salt; buffered grades are treated further to reduce the sodium and potassium held in the particles.

EC is a measure of the salt level in a growing medium; low-EC grades suit salt-sensitive crops. The EC figure and the test method are agreed in each order. Coco peat and coir fibre are separate products.
